If you head down to Birkrig in Skelmersdale today, you’ll find Digmoor Post Office serving as a quiet, essential anchor for the neighborhood. While it might look like a standard, modern counter, its roots are tied to the dramatic transformation of Skelmersdale itself—evolving from a historic, gritty mining hamlet into a 1960s "New Town."

Before the concrete, roundabouts, and modern housing estates arrived, Digmoor was a small, tight-knit village surrounded by farmland and the heavy industry of the Lancashire Coalfield. In those days, a local post office wasn't just a place to buy stamps; it was the absolute lifeblood of the community. It was where miners' families collected pensions, neighbors swapped gossip, and the isolated village kept its vital link to the outside world.

The New Town Shift

​When Skelmersdale was designated a New Town in 1961 to ease the cramped, post-war housing shortages in nearby Liverpool, the landscape changed forever.  

Today, operating out of its Birkrig location, it remains exactly what it was over a half-century ago: a comforting, reliable constant in a town defined by rapid change. Whether it's managing everyday banking or sending parcels, it stands as a living bridge between "Old Skem" and the vibrant community of today.
